Sigrid Thornton found it ‘thrilling and daunting’ to play Judy Garland

PLAYING Judy Garland was all in the eyes for Sigrid Thornton. Appearing as the great Wizard of Oz actress in the upcoming telemovie, Peter Allen: Not The Boy Next Door, Thornton said: “Seeing myself in the brown contacts was really the clincher. My eyes are quite light so making them dark really changed my face.”

A lifelong fan of Garland, Thornton admits it was both a “thrilling and daunting” task to play Garland.

“(Playing Garland) was a bit like jumping off a cliff but I always think that’s a good recommendation for taking a job,” the Brisbane-raised Thornton told News Corp Australia.

SIGRID Thornton, beloved as Laura from Seachange in the late nineties, needed a major temptation to return to TV. To play Judy Garland did the trick.

IT’S hard to see any obvious parallels between small town magistrate, Laura Gibson of SeaChange fame and showbiz luminary, Judy Garland.

Until Sigrid Thornton explains her decision to take on the two disparate TV characters came down to the same leap of faith.
